Having just returned from sunny Florida, and by that I mean HOT Florida, I can assure you that while it may technically be fall, it still feels very much like summer.
We didn’t experience many cooling showers or storms during our visit but there are definitely ways to combat the heat, especially while touring the parks.
- Stay hydrated. There’s nothing worse than heat exhaustion or dehydration. Walt Disney World offers FREE ice water at all Counter Service locations within the 4 parks. Yes, FREE! Walk right up and ask a Cast Member at any of the locations and they’ll be happy to help. We took advantage of this last week. Sometimes we were given large cups, sometimes small, but no matter they were free, and much-needed.
- Take breaks. Have a seat in a nice air-conditioned theater like The Hall of Presidents in the Magic Kingdom and enjoy the show. Find a shady spot and have a nice refreshing beverage. People watch. Just make sure you listen to your body. Many people even build in time to return to their resorts for a swim and a nap midday and return to the parks later in the evening. I’ve done that and it DOES make a difference.
- Use cooling towels. There are many towels and designs on the market. I’ve used the Way 2 Cool cooling towels for the past two trips and they make a huge difference. You can take them to the parks in your bag and then wet them when they are needed. It’s a great cooling sensation when you use them around your neck on those hot days. Disney also has cooling towels available within the parks just in case you need them.
- Misting fans. You can’t visit a Disney park without seeing, or possibly being sprayed by. the blue misting fans they sell. The are priced at around $19 each and feature a water spray and fan. Wonderful for a hot sunny day, and to keep the kids occupied. Amazon sells several versions like this one for much less. Just remember you’d need to pack it.
While visiting the parks in September may be warm, you are rewarded with much lighter crowds than in the summer months. There are also many activities that begin in September like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, fall decorations in the Magic Kingdom and the Epcot Food & Wine Festival.
