You’ve arrived at port, now what?
Embarking on a cruise is an exciting adventure filled with the promise of relaxation, exploration, and unforgettable experiences. However, the first moments on board can set the tone for the entire journey. To ensure a smooth start to your cruise vacation, here are the top three things to do as soon as you step foot on the ship.
1.Proceed to Muster Station
Safety should always be the top priority, and that’s why heading to your assigned muster station is the first order of business. The muster station is the designated area where passengers gather in the unlikely event of an emergency. Cruise lines conduct mandatory safety drills before the ship sets sail, and attendance is required. Pay close attention to the safety instructions and familiarize yourself with the location of life jackets and emergency exits. While it might seem like a routine, taking this seriously ensures that everyone on board is well-prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.
Many cruise lines are now including a safety video that you must watch in your stateroom in addition to the muster station checkin. Be sure to watch the video, if available. Safety first!
2.Drop Your Bags at Your Room
After the safety drill, it’s time to make your way to your stateroom. Cruise ships can be massive, and navigating them can be overwhelming at first. While any luggage left at the port with the porters will be delivered to the ship, dropping your carryon luggage to your cabin lightens your load and frees up your hands to explore the ship more comfortably. Plus, you can focus on getting acclimated to your new home at sea. Take a moment to unpack some essentials, like sunscreen, a swimsuit, and any items you’ll need for the rest of the day. Some cruise lines do request that you enter your room only after a certain time so please adhere to signage and announcements.
3. Eat Lunch in the Dining Room
One of the great joys of cruising is the abundance of delicious food options, and there’s no better way to kick off your cruise than with a satisfying meal. While buffet options are often available, consider heading to the main dining room for lunch. The dining room typically offers a more relaxed and upscale atmosphere compared to the bustling buffet areas. Enjoying a sit-down meal allows you to unwind and savor the beginning of your vacation. It’s also an excellent opportunity to get to know the layout of the ship and plan your activities for the days ahead. Not all ships have a main dining room open for your first meal. Check you cruise app, or ask a cruise line employee for information about available meal options.
By following these three steps – proceeding to your muster station, dropping your bags at your room, and enjoying lunch in the dining room – you’ll ensure a seamless and enjoyable start to your cruise vacation. Taking care of safety measures, settling into your accommodations, and indulging in a delicious meal will set the stage for the incredible adventures that await you on the high seas. Bon voyage!
