As a travel advisor, I always want my clients to feel informed and prepared, especially when heading out of the country. That’s why I highly recommend enrolling in STEP before your next international adventure.
What is STEP?
STEP is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to register their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Why is STEP so valuable?
Here’s why I encourage all of my clients to enroll:
📬 Get Real-Time Safety Updates
Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive important information about your destination—think natural disasters, civil unrest, health alerts, and other potential risks. These updates come directly from the local embassy or consulate, so the information is accurate and timely.
🛂 Help During Emergencies
If there’s an emergency while you’re abroad, the embassy will be able to contact you or help you get back in touch with your family. Whether it’s a weather-related delay or a more serious event, being enrolled means you’re on the radar of U.S. officials who can assist.
📞 Peace of Mind for Your Loved Ones
STEP also helps your family and friends at home. If they can’t reach you and are worried, they can contact the embassy for help in locating or assisting you—especially useful if you’re somewhere without consistent phone or internet service.

There’s no cost to sign up. All you need to do is create an account, enter your travel information, and you’re set. It takes just a few minutes, but the peace of mind is priceless.
